Fire Damage Tips

Until your mitigation contractor arrives - Concentrate on staying safe!

  • Did the fire marshall say the property was safe to enter? If not, stay out of there.
  • Avoid using electricity until a professional assures you it is safe.
  • Take lots of photos of the affected areas before any cleanup happens. This documentation of the fire's aftermath is crucial to support the insurance claim process.
  • Even if the fire marshall says the property itself is safe to enter, if you have any chronic respiratory conditions, avoid going inside until the smoke and soot can be thoroughly removed.

What to Do After a Fire

  • Limit your movement around the affected area. You can cause more damage by disrupting the soot prior to cleaning.
  • Since the electricity will most likely be off for a while, empty out the fridge and freezer.
  • Chrome fixtures can be safely cleaned with a petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Change your HVAC filters prior to restarting the system or soot could travel through the entire house beyond the affected area.
  • Also, tape cheesecloth over the registers throughout the house to check if the soot infiltrated your duct system.

What Not to Do After a Fire

  • Don't touch anything covered in soot with your bare hands. The oils in your skin can interact with the soot and cause permanent staining on surfaces.
  • Do not use electricity until the system has been deemed safe by professionals.
  • Do not enter fire damaged areas where studs or ceilings were affected until a contractor can ensure the structural integrity of the area.
  • Follow our recommendations for water losses if the fire was put out by your local fire department.
  • Do not use a regular dry cleaning services to clean clothing items affected by smoke. The chemicals can permanently set in the odors.
