What To Do When You See Storm Damage

  • Take photos of any visible storm damage: fallen trees, pooling water, blown-off shingles, etc. Early documentation assists with any insurance claim.
  • If you suspect roof damage, call a mitigation for 24/7 emergency roof tarping service to protect your home's interior from the elements. Some roofing companies will do this, but often not.
  • Check your attic space for any signs of water.
  • Contact your insurance company to begin the claims process right away to "time-stamp" any losses.
  • Use a towel or mop to soak up any small pools of water, but leave any standing water for a professional to deal with.
  • You don't need to wait for electricity to be restored to call in a mitigation company to assess the damage. Call right away, especially if there is any water damage or if you think you might need emergency board up and roof tarping.

What Not To Do When yOu see Storm Damage

  • Do not use the electricity if any water intrusion had contact with outlets.
  • Do not go up on your roof to inspect it yourself. There may be damage to the structures under the shingles you can't see, making it especially dangerous. Also, wet shingles are slippery.
  • Even if the electricity is out, do not go near downed power lines. Don't try to remove fallen branches if they are near or on top of power lines.
